If hosting matters, a slightly larger three-person unit is a reasonable middle ground, but jumping straight to a five-person cabin for a household of two usually means paying more upfront and per session for capacity that sits empty most nights.
Ventilation doesn’t show up in a product photo, so it’s easy to skip thinking about it until a session feels stuffy or the wood starts showing water spots that don’t dry out between uses. A proper sauna has an intake vent low near the heater and an exhaust vent higher on the opposite wall, letting fresh air cycle through during a session instead of just recirculating hot, stale air. Ask specifically about the ventilation design before buying rather than assuming every cabin handles it the same way, since budget models sometimes cut this corner to simplify construction.
The lowest-priced unit at a given size is rarely cheap by accident. It usually means thinner cedar or a lower grade wood substitute, a heater built to a lower duty cycle, or thinner wall insulation, all of which show up later as slower warm-up, higher electricity use, or a heater that needs replacing sooner than a mid-range model would. That doesn’t mean the most expensive option is automatically the smartest buy either. A cabin might carry a 5 or 10 year structural warranty against wood defects, while the heating element, the part most likely to actually fail, is covered for as little as one or two years unless you pay for an extended plan. Buyers who assume “warrantied” means the whole unit is covered for the same period sometimes find out otherwise only when the heater dies in year three and the repair bill lands on them in full. Reading exactly what’s covered, and for how long, on the heater specifically takes a few minutes and avoids an unpleasant surprise down the line.
It’s also worth checking whether the warranty covers parts only or parts and labor. A heating element itself might be inexpensive to replace, but if a technician’s visit isn’t included, labor can end up costing more than the part, especially if the manufacturer doesn’t have local service and you’re paying for a general electrician to figure out an unfamiliar system.
